【SCIE Website 090504 Biology Dept.】Trip to Botanical Garden. Students of both G1 and G2 biology classes went to a refreshing botanical garden in Guangzhou on April 28th which is filled of a variety of flowers and plants - South China Botanical Garden. South China Botanical Garden Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCBG, CAS), was founded in 1929 by Chen Huanyong (Woon-young Chun) who is a renowned botanist and academician of CAS.
SCBG, a botanical world, charmed the students deeply with its landscape and horticulture. It is well known that SCBG strives for an advanced botanical garden integrated with tropical and subtropical plant research, species conservation, science popularization, and sustainable resource utilization, all making this garden a brilliant place for research.
After arriving, we, guided by an expert, came to the nursery and exhibition zone to observe over 11,000 plant species including some special collections such as magnolias, palms, gingers and orchids. Frankly speaking, the arboretum was so spacious that most students were not able to find their ways without the guidance, but it is enjoyable for us to immerse somehow into this wonderland.
It was only about 1 hour that the tour of several arboretums were finished, however, most students didn’t decide to leave immediately as all the participants would have to hand in a piece of homework from Elaine after their investigation and research. Hence, some patient students stayed longer in the greenhouse and tried their utmost to search for the data of plants required, with common names and scientific names recorded. It’s sure that students, throughout this process especially from the homework, learned a great many of new biological vocabularies accompanied by further comprehension of the features of certain plants, such as coca is psychoactive to some extent.
Time in the afternoon is free for students to allocate, and they all went to discover the huge extra ventricular botanical garden separately in order to satisfy their curiosity and appreciation of beauty further. Congregating at 3:30, students went on the return journey with finished homework, and precious memories certainly.
