Dear Parents, honourable guests, teachers and fellow students, a very good evening to you all. I am Philip of A2-1, and I am Vivian from A2-7. In representing all SCIE graduates of 2009, we are proud to stand here tonight and make a speech.
How time flies. We are almost twenty years of age and our beloved SCIE is already six. We are about to matriculate. Looking back, SCIE came from a humble beginning of barely 100 students to more than 500 today; from the aimless drifting in the early years to today’s stability; from anonymity to the best known A-Level school in China.
Speaking both for ourselves and for the graduates sitting in this magnificent hall tonight, we have all come a long way. We grew physically and emotionally; we made friends with fellow students from all over the country; we delved deeper into our chosen fields of academic study; and we made our own share of mistakes. Luckily, we have all come through. Well, almost all.
People say SCIE’s horizons reach far and wide; how true they are! Students of Biology checked out the Wetland National Park in Hong Kong to see for themselves how ecosystems really function; students of Psychology visited the Shenzhen Mental Hospital to match theory with practice in real life; students of Business Studies learnt the true meaning of Scales of Economy in front of a production line in a local company; students of Chemistry witnessed expensive and heavy duty analytical instruments at work at Shenzhen University…We have been lucky enough to supplement our classroom knowledge with real life experiences and situations, whereas our counterparts in state schools sweat away, buried under mountains of books and exercise questions.
Then there are the extracurricular activities that brighten so much of our campus life. The Science & Technology Festival (remember the soaring water rockets?), the Halloween Party (how about Percy’s McDonald’s Girl’s outfit!), the SCIE Idol Competition (didn’t Marshall and Jack get some screaming fans? And then there was Forrest with his travelling show around the school, of course), the Sports competitions (how many records were broken by Albert at the sports meeting?), the Chinese New Year Performances (The A2 Superman’s Dance was really something special), not to mention all the after-school clubs.
生物组的Dee,由于太热衷人体器官,曾经把我们的kiki同学叫成Kidney;
在化学课上显得博大精深,但似乎没有第二件衣服的Joey;
We have teachers from all parts of China and from over the world. Not surprisingly they come in all sorts of flavours and idiosyncrasies, many of which impressed us and tickled our funny bones no end. For instance:
The lovely Raymond, who always tells us, “you can sleep when you are dead”. Very true, and musical too;
The smiling Tim, who with perfect timing produced a White Rabbit toffee lolly to provide us with energy and motivation when we were doing the Data Response paper;
The young Jimmy from IT who gets stopped by the guard for not wearing school uniform;
The biology guru Dee who once called Kiki of A2-7 Kidney;
The very strict Joey who seems to know all about Chemistry but doesn’t have a second set of clothes to wear;
The self acclaimed Go Chess champ Alan;
The tae kwon do black belt Elaine, who made students do push-ups in class when they didn’t answer her questions correctly! That changed Alex (?) from a chubby chub into a body builder, so he is now the object of many girls’ crushes.
There are many more examples of humour and fun provided by our great bunch of teachers, willingly or unwittingly, but due to time constraint, we won’t be able to go through all of them… Yeah, yeah, yeah, we heard you Mr. MacLaren: “why wasn’t I mentioned?”
Now seriously, the fact that we are here tonight, proud and jubilant, has most to do with our teachers. It is you, all of you, to whom we are most indebted. It is your tireless work, your meticulous preparation, your passionate teaching, your endless patience, and your unrivalled professionalism that have brought us where we are now. We will never forget Jay’s ability to make difficult concepts easy to understand; the seemingly tough Mr. Greenwood, whose humour created a relaxing and productive classroom; Stephen’s thorough and careful marking with his fluorescent pen; Prof Yan’s clear and logical structure of lesson planning; Prof Wang’s succinct and highly condensed notes; Du Meng’s hours of personal help after class; Jeff’s extensive background knowledge; Mike’s great use of examples; David’s wide range of class activities; Dee’s persistence in chasing up overdue work; Jill’s patience in helping straggling students…There are so many more. There is so much more. We will take all these precious memories with us as we go into university education, or even as we ourselves begin professional careers, because you have given us great role models, and great sources of energy and inspiration. Let us, on behalf of all graduates here tonight, take a bow and say Thank You.
Now let us turn to our beloved parents, whether they are here or not tonight. We grew up strong and healthy under your loving care. Now that we have gradually matured, and are starting to make our own choices in life, you give us less lecturing and nagging, but more trust and respect. Even though you try to hide your love deep inside your hearts, we feel it warm and strong in everything you do for us. We may not know what pressures you endure in your long hours of work, but your graying hair tells of the sacrifices you make. We have no excuses to let you down. We will do you proud! On behalf of all graduates please allow us to say, we love you, mum and dad. (bow)
Finally, we would like to say a few words to our school mates here. We have spent some wonderful years together at this great school, and we have accomplished marvellous feats in various school projects through cooperation and team spirit. To use a traditional Chinese expression, we were destined to meet. That’s why our separate paths converged at SCIE. Now that our paths will diverge again, we each take away with us shared memories and great friendships. Modern technologies make staying in touch easy. Whenever one of us needs a helping hand, we will be ready, wherever in the world we may be. Maybe one day in the future, we will meet again, share some wonderful stories of SCIE and have a laugh.
With a trace of sadness and regret, we are about to part company; but with excitement and anticipation, we look forward to exploring the unknown world. New environments will bring new challenges and new opportunities. Universities of the world, here we come!
Finally, our congratulations go to all our fellow graduates who have made it this far, and our well wishes go to all our teachers and parents. May SCIE become bigger and better! Thank you all.
