This academic year, the number of students has been the highest in our school’s history. Coupled with an unusually hot summer, the electric power needed to support air conditioning, lighting and other electric appliances has rocketed to the maximum level that our electricity infrastructure could allow, even going over the limit occasionally, which caused grave concerns of fire for the school management. In order to avoid the danger of melt-down of electric cables, and to guarantee the power supply to teaching programmes, the management had to introduce restrictions: students were not allowed to use air conditioners in the dormitory except for the periods of 11:50 am to 1:30 pm, 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm and after 9:00 pm.

　　今年我校学生人数空前之多。伴随着今年夏天的异常高温，学校的电力设施供给空调，电灯和其他电器的能量之大已经达到最大负荷，甚至偶尔超负荷运转。学校非常担心这样会引起火灾。为了避免由电线烧坏引起火灾，为了确保能够正常教学，学校不得不作出以下规定：学生禁止在午间11:50 -1:30之间, 下午5:30 - 7:00之间和晚间9:00之后使用寝室里的空调。

　　After this restriction took effect in the dormitory, some students complained that this measure was introduced to save money, rather than avoid the risk of fire. Admittedly, students living in the dormitory were inconvenienced somewhat by this measure, so in order to fix this problem once and for all, the Board has agreed to upgrade the entire infrastructure of the power supply.

　　寝室限制用电的规定实行之后，有些学生反映学校这么做是为了节省开支而不是怕引起火灾。不可否认，这个规定确实对学生的起居造成一定程度上的不便。所以为了一劳永逸地解决此问题，学校董事会同意将学校的电力系统升级。

　　According to Jane Jiang, head of the Combined Administration Department, the project was carried out between October 4th and 7th, when the school was closed for the National Day holiday, at the cost of 300,000 RMB. The tests done after the work showed all aspects of the infrastructure satisfied planned objectives. The maximum electricity consumption allowed increased from 499KVA to 630 KVA, and the restrictions in the student dormitory have been removed. However, Jane stresses that students and staff should still avoid wasting electricity, particularly in relation to using air-conditioners and multi-media equipment in the classroom.

　　据行政综合管理处负责人蒋主任说，设备的更新已经在国庆节假期的10月4日至7日内完成，耗资30万人民币。对新电力系统的测试也随后完成，结果令人满意。最大的电流量从之前的499千伏安上升到现在的630千伏安， 寝室限制用电的规定也被废除。但是，蒋主任还是强调，尽管如此，学生和教工还是要避免浪费能源，尤其是空调还有教室里多媒体的使用一定要得到妥善管理。
