At the start of this semester, SCIE G2 geography students traveled to Cheung Chau island of Hong Kong to carry out coastline, tourism and land uses fieldwork, which lasted three days from March 07, 2010 to March o7, 2010.for their incoming skill exam. The trip was headed by Mr Mike Gadd and Sunny from the Geography Department, who believe that geography learning should go beyond the classroom. They hoped that this field trip would bring to light the importance of geography as it touched both natural and human aspects of the real world. Approximately 33 geography students were invited to this beneficial trip, together with 3 A1 students who also attended as assistants of teachers. All the students are divided into two groups.
The first day
We divided all the students into two main groups base on the sex structure, these groups alternately undertook beach profile and land uses investigation. When some students of one group spent morning investigating the effects of marine processes on the beach at Tai Kwai Wan bay and Kwun Yam Wa bay. They measured the slope of the beach and samples of eroded beach material. The other group students investigated the different types of land uses on this offshore island resort. Using a number of different fieldwork investigation techniques they collected the primary data. The groups worked well together and enjoyed the opportunity to use their geographical knowledge in the outdoors
On the next day, all the students were asked to do the questionnaire survey of tourism and migration around the Cheung Chau island. Even though the weather was not nice, the temperature declined dramatically, the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the while process. Members of tourist and local people who were asked to help by answering their questionnaires were impressed by their polite manners and friendly smiles.
Now the field trip was over, but the work in the classroom continues for processing the data from the Cheung Chau island. According to a student, the trip provided them with a wonderful opportunity to relate their knowledge acquired in the classroom to the real world. Another student said that having this trip makes a new experience in learning geography where he can see the true landforms rather than seeing photos in the text book, while at the same time, enjoy some of the natural wonders. It is hoped that this types of field trip could be organized every semester to support students’ IGCSE and AS geography study in working towards their target grade.
Overall it was a superb trip where the IGCSE geography class represented the school well. The other staffs also commented positively on the keen attitude and how the group demonstrated application of their knowledge from the classroom in the real landscape. Many thanks go to the staff who helped us on the trip especially the staff at combined service department for preparing and making geography equipments immediately.
