The Resource Recovery Project

If you have read anything at all about resource recovery, you will probably know something about recycling bins. Recently, the student organisation “Blazing Green” in SCIE launched a resource recovery project on campus. Recycling bins will be used to replace the normal bins in classrooms in order to collect recyclable materials.

Nowadays, with increasing pollution, more and more people have started to realise the importance of environmental protection. Taking advantage of reusable resources around us would be a good way to protect the environment. This project by “Blazing Green” is the first recycling project at SCIE. Besides the students, Wendy, the HoD of the English Department, and Cedric, the Art & Design teacher, were also involved in it. They gave the students many pieces of advice based on their previous experience. “Almost every time when I see the bins in the classrooms, they are overflowing. It’s very untidy and unhygienic,” said Wendy. “But it would be much better if we used recycle bins instead, since the garbage can be classified and made use of.” Cedric also noted, “Nowadays many countries in the world attach great importance to recycling useful resources. As a member of SCIE, we should also participate in this kind of activity, and make our own contribution to protecting the environment around us.”

Erica from G2-1 is one of the leaders of the project. According to her, this resource recovery project will last for more than a year and a half. “Blazing Green” has already bought the recycling bins from a US company. The bins will first be placed in the classrooms on the first floor of the school building for a trial period. After that every classroom in school will be equipped with recycling bins. There are three recycling bins in one set, and they are for recycling paper, bottles and non-recyclables respectively. “Something worth mentioning is that all the bins are actually made of recycled plastic, so they are completely environmentally friendly,” Erica explains. “After the rubbish is gathered, we will have a company that comes regularly to collect those recyclable materials such as bottles and waste paper.”

The members of “Blazing Green” made great efforts in this project and overcame a lot of difficulties. Both Wendy and Cedric spoke highly of them. “Everyone is pretty involved in it. We’re really impressed by their commitment and persistence”. As the Earth Day (April 22nd) is approaching, it is hoped that everyone in SCIE can make good use of the recycling bins, since what we do will make a difference.
