Applications to Oxford and Cambridge Universities 如何申请牛剑

When October comes every year, all A2 students begin a very important task, university applications. However, those A2 students who apply to Oxford and Cambridge universities have extra work and emotions to contend with: they need to prepare themselves for possible interviews, and the feelings of excitement and anxiety that go with such an exercise.

This year, SCIE is sending to Shanghai about ten students for Cambridge interviews, which will be held at the end of October. Mock interviews for these students have begun. There are also other students who would like to be interviewed in the UK, at Cambridge University. Their mock interviews are scheduled for November.

Bernard Rawlins, Head of the Overseas Studies Office, introduces the outline of the application process as follows:

  作为海外留学指导中心的负责人,Bernard Rawlins针对申请大学的流程进行以下说明:

First of all, what kind of students can be qualified as an applicant? From 2010, the new grade A* will be introduced at AS/A-Levels. Generally, applicants should have at least the equivalent of one A* and two As, an IELTS score of 7.0 for all four parts, or IGCSE English as a Second Language B grade (Oxford) or IGCSE English as a First Language C grade (Cambridge).

Mr. Rawlins says that although these two universities require very strong academic results, there are thousands of qualified applications from around the world each year. They are looking for students who have independent studying abilities, so the way to give the interviewing professor a favourable impression is through the Personal Statement and interview, also through English skills, particularly written and oral English, which play an important role.

The interviews of Oxford and Cambridge are similar: exercises, discussions and tests are the most common formats. Remember, answers are not the key, but your logical thinking is! That is what the interviewers are looking for.

Mr. Rawlins also would like to remind students who choose to be interviewed in the UK: please check your passport and get a valid visa beforehand from the UK Visa Application Centre in Shenzhen (see the address on the UCAS notice board or the UCAS Handbook page30).

Also, Mr. Rawlins very kindly offers his personal experience to all interviewees.

1.Make sure you know all the contents of your subject syllabus.
2.Be very familiar with related subjects
3.Be very familiar with applied fields of your subject.
4.Research your chosen college or faculty (e.g. a professor’s theory)
5.At interview, prepare some questions to ask; make the interview more like a conversation.
6.Do not be nervous (the interviewer may help you relax).
7.Read broadly in English, especially if you wish to take Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
  8.Always be prepared!

Finally, we hope all the A2 students get good results from their applications!
