A1心理学社会实践A1 Psychology Field Trip

         On November 19th, 18 A1 students who have been studying Psychology in their A levels went on a Psychology field trip to Green Oasis Elementary School. They attempted to do the ‘Samuel and Bryant’ experiment, which they had just studied, with some Grades One and Three students at the GOS.
          11月19日,18位A1选修心理学的同学们去了城市绿洲学校进行一次社会实践。他们打算做一个‘Samuel and Bryant’的实验,这是他们刚学到的。绿洲学校一年级和三年级的学生作为实验对象参加。


          


Mr. Joe Greenwood, Psychology teacher of the group, explained the experiment for us. “The experiment was about the perception and conservation (the ability to recognize changes in quantity) of the participants, who were the children that were interviewed. Only the shape or the container was changed and not the quantity, and therefore the perception was changed and questions were asked of the participants. We wanted to know if the children recognized the difference and knew that it was the same amount regardless of the shape. The younger kids would say no when asked whether they were the same, because they don’t have the ability yet to ‘conserve’; it is something that they learn. So the result we found was that young children do not have the ability to conserve and perhaps the older children do. The study was one of several which we study in Developmental Psychology, which is how we develop as we grow. This experiment was to show that there is development from a young child, say 3 or 4 years old, to a child of 8 years old. The 8 year-old would understand, so they had ‘developed’ cognitively. Though it is very basic, this is one way in which we have all learned and developed.”
        我校同行的心理学教师Joe Greenwood先生,向大家解释说明了这个实验:“它是关于实验对象的感知及“保量”(尤其是感觉量变的能力),这些对象就是参加实验的小学生。只有形状或容器改变了,内含物质的数量不变,因此学生们的感观就变了,接着就会向这些小孩子提问。我们想知道的是,小学生们是否能够发现:容器形状的变化不会导致内含物质数量的变化。当我们问这些孩子,物质数量是否一样?他们都说不一样,因为他们还不具备“保量”的能力,而这个能力是要通过学习来掌握的。因此我们得出的结论也就是小孩子没有“保量”的能力而大一点的孩子也许有。这是我们在发展心理学中学习到的内容之一,即孩子如何在成长中提高能力。这个实验是要说明一个三四岁的小孩到七八岁时,会有一些发展。8岁的小孩能够明白,因此他们在认知上有进步了。尽管这是非常基本的道理,却是我们每一个人学习和发展的方式。
        When asked about the purpose of doing this trip, Joe said, “The purpose is to show a little reality and give the students an opportunity to ‘experience’ studies and results. We can talk about it in the classroom and show it on a PPT or a film, but it is just like in Developmental Psychology itself, we all learn in different ways.”
当问到此次出访的目的时,Joe说:“目的是向大家展示一些很真实的东西,并且给学生们一个机会去实践书本里的知识和结论。我们可以在教室里讨论可以在PPT上演示,但这就像发展心理学本身一样,我们都通过不同的方式来学习。”
           Joe also commended the students’ effort on the trip. He said, “Though they had expected difficulties in controlling the participants and the environment, they did well, getting an appreciation for what experimenters have to go through.”
            Joe老师同样表演了学生们的表现:“尽管他们在控制实验对象和环境中遇到了很多困难,他们仍然表现很好,经历了一个实验者所要经历的过程。”
             One student, Abel from A1-8, said after the trip, “Doing the experiment myself helps me to know more about it. I can experience the feelings of a real psychologist doing the experiment. I believe I like Psychology more after the experiment. I believe this trip has allowed more people to find the fun of psychology in daily life.” Linton from A1-1 said, “Though we did lots of preparation, which we thought was more than enough, we still felt we lacked experience.” When asked whether performing the experiment was difficult or not, both of them said yes. “It’s really a hard job to make children listen to you. They just take the things away from the table!” Linton said.
             A1-8的于伯阳同学在回校后说道:“这个实验帮助我了解到更多的东西。我能体会到一个心理学家在做实验的感觉。我感觉经过此次出访后,我更喜欢心理学。这次活动使更多同学找到了心理学在日常生活中的乐趣。”A1-1的周麟东同学说:“尽管我们做了非常充足的准备,我们仍然觉得不够。”当被问及这个实验是否有难度时,他们两个都认为很难。“让孩子们听从于你真是一件相当困难的事情,他们只想把东西从桌子上拿走。”周同学说。
                     Joe informed us that there will be more trips and also experiments done on the campus.
